Today we had 50 miles to ride from Mesa to Superior AZ. Jim and I started at 6:30 to minimize traffic and sun. It was actually under 70 degrees when we started, downright cold for Mesa, comfortable riding for us. The ride across town was uneventful and about 25 miles in we were out of the Phoenix area and starting the climb up to Superior along highway 60. The road was good and we made good time arriving in time for lunch. We biked to the old downtown of Superior and found the Miners Diner. I had a huge and tasty club and about 64oz of water, a great stop. Our waitress was a biker and did not sound positive about our planned route: lots of climbing and blind switch backs. When we checked into the Copper Mountain motel, we found out the “old 60 road and tunnel” was not closed, which is what we found on line. The problem with taking 60 East from Superior is no shoulder to ride and a tunnel without any bike space. The old road takes us past those problems, for the cost of walking the bikes for 3+ miles because of the old road/trail conditions. This route also cuts a day and 60 miles of riding from the trip. Jim and I got back from the test hike and met Mike and Ron. We went to De Marcos Italian restaurant (looks like a dive) and had another great meal. I had Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo along with homemade bread. We discussed the plan over dinner and agreed to the new route. Tomorrow we walk/push-bikes/ride the old road and then bike 60 to Globe, a short day.

The hike along the old road to 60, looking to safely get past the tunnel.
