Franklinton to Popularville to Vancleave

Yesterday we crossed into Mississippi and and by luck camped with the ACA folks.  The campground was “interesting”, many full time residents and a few old cars that did not run, and a few confederate flags.  We found a BBQ place across the road that was good and filling. We camped under a structure to try and reduce dew, not sure it helped but not much helps when the temperatures falls to 37f.  I woke to a spectacular foggy sunrise, which warmed my heart but not my hands.  A cup of coffee and a few oatmeal’s fixed that.  With the time change, we were up at 6am. We packed our wet tents and hit the road.  No real services for 60 miles.  Our first stop was a Dollar General for drinks and a snack.  A few more miles down the road we found a gas station with a sandwich shop, they make a great Club which covered lunch.  We were heading to the Jackson County RV Campground but found it closed, 73 miles down and nothing for another 20 miles!  The next road (Ball park rd) had several county buildings and a ball park and fire station.  We went to the first building to inquire about a place to stay.  It was a community center with a baby shower going on.  We were invited in to eat (no restaurants nearby also was a challenge) so we had a great dinner via the kindness of strangers.  They pointed to the ball field and said the bathrooms are open all night.  We went down and inquired at the firehouse but they did not know.  So here we are at the ball field “stealth camping” with bathrooms, water, power and a roof over our tents.

2400 miles down under 700 to go!

Tomorrow a hotel on Dolphin Island!
